books won't get you far esp in learning the 50 sounds. and to learn japanese you have to memorize all 50 sounds first.
karaoke is the best tool. sing along with the song in japanese lyric will help you memorize them in no time. then you will need the books for the verb/noun changing, there's only 14 type of change so it's not really hard there. learn as many nouns and verbs as you can from any souce you like anime/manga/game/novel etc etc. then... if you go for middle school level novel/game with a dictionary beside you... you can remember kanji quite fast. the hardest part is writting them lol! =p
